30 day meme- day 1

O K I guess this is the way we are doing this.
This isn't a good time for me to start a 30 day anything but life is like that.

Day 01 - A book series you wish had gone on longer OR a book series you wish would just freaking end already (or both!)

Once upon a time - maybe 30 years ago - there was brief mystery series. Can't remember who wrote it. Maybe a husband and wife writing under a nom de plume combination of both their names. The two main characters were Fiddler and Fiona.

Fiona was a financial wizard. Fiddler had been left a fortune in illegal money by an unscrupulous relative. Fiona laundered it. They were married but had an off again on again relationship both passionately in love with each other but.... They lived in a California beach town. With no need to work for a living Fiddler took on "adventures" with Fiona's help. She continued to be a financial wizard.

Their world was fast and exotic. Their relationship passionate and tumultuous.
Money - fashion - exotic settings - the books were vicarious living.
I wish I had the books. I'd love to re-read them. I got them from the library.

To end I suppose I could sat Twilight but since I don't read them it really doesn't matter to me.

Surname Book Meme

From the biggest bookcase you have, pick out one book whose author’s last name starts with each letter of your last name. If you have no books by an author whose last name starts with a particular letter, go to the next letter. If you have two of the same letter in your last name, get two separate authors, not two books by the same author. Bonus: If you can, pick the first book you haven’t read off your shelf, unless you’re one of those people who’s read all the books you own.

- Post the first sentence of each book, along with the author and title. Feel free to skip prefaces and such, especially if they’re by a different writer.

The Thirty Day Book Meme: Day 01!

Based on feedback, I'm going to post the day's prompt each day in the comm. Please feel free to respond in comments, but you should also feel free to do it on your journal if you prefer, or if you want to, go ahead and post your answer to the comm separately.

Both structured commenting and total free-for-alling is encouraged. Game on, people!

30 Day Book Meme - Day 01

Day 01 - A book series you wish had gone on longer

Barry Hughart's books about Master Li (a sage with a flaw in his character) and Number Ten Ox, his brawny (but not stupid) assistant. Fantasy stories set in a mythical China that never was, with humour, adventure and wonderful characters.

There are three in the series - Bridge of Birds, The Story of the Stone and Eight Skilled Gentlemen, but the really frustrating part is that the fourth book has actually been written, but Hughart is so pissed off with the publishing industry that he won't let anyone publish it. Gah!

OR a book series you wish would just freaking end already (or both!)

George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. Not because I want to read it - I gave up on it about 100 pages into the first book when I realised that I hadn't yet met a single character that I'd bother to spit on if they were on fire - but in the probably forlorn hope that if Martin gets the wretched series out of his system, he might go back to writing stuff that I enjoy reading.

***mod post***

A hearty welcome, with beer and skittles (or kegs and bowling if preferred) to oddmonster who joins the ranks of book_memes maintainers.

Why four mods for a community of under 500 users? Because you're all so bleedin' rowdy, that's why. Why, some of you posted today. WHERE WILL IT END. Accordingly, oddmonster has been supplied with a stick, and has license to use it.
