If I could read a foreign language, I would choose Greek so that I could read texts such as the Christian New Testament and the Platonic and Socratic dialogues in their original language.

modern greek wouldn't help
And the ancient Greek and New Testament Greek are also different

Indeed, they are, but it's still possible to learn the different forms. My husband has a degree in Classical languages and did a bit of study with various original philosophical works (not the original docs, of course, just the original text). I think it's fascinating and would love to learn them.

I know modern greek and can understand most (80%) of the New Testament in its old greek form. But the parts I miss, even if few, alter the meaning of a sentence entirely.

Considering how much misinterpretation has occurred due to linguistic differences + bad translations, regarding those documents, it'd be wonderful to comprehend the originals.
