I fall in love with a book when I fall in love with the characters. I'm very much about the people in the story, which is why I find myself drawn to book series; I like being able to follow the characters for more than just a few hundred pages. I also fall in love with the characters' reality. If the author is able to create a rich 'verse for the characters to inhabit, I'm absolutely thrilled. I want to be able to lose myself in the book, and nothing makes that happen better than well-written characters and a well-constructed universe.

Certainly well-written characters and/or a rich setting could lead to my recommending a book, but I don't usually base my recommendations on the make-up of the book as much as on the person to whom I'm making a recommendation. I've read some rather excellent books recently that I absolutely loved, but wouldn't recommend to more than a couple of people because they wouldn't be a good match between book and reader.

- it gives me new ideas and realisations (and sometimes new things to purchase-ideas)
- it's 'easy' to read, the story flows well (this doesn't have to be the case sometimes, but often it happens to be one reason)
- the subject matter is interesting
- the 'book world' is interesting
- I like the people in it (or at least the majority)

etc. etc.

Great writing, especially dialogue, a unique plot (sometimes), and subject matter I enjoy.

Pretty much the same thing. If I think a friend may enjoy it because they like some of the same things I do, I will sometimes recommend a book.

I don't know what makes me love a book, because I love so many different kinds of books. But if I love a book I will recommend it - unless it's embarassing to have read it and then I won't rate it.
