I don't lend out my books to anyone (except maybe my mother, and that's because she feels the same way about books that I do). I don't do it to be mean, of course. I'm just extremely uptight about the condition of my books and couldn't bear the thought of having a book damaged, or even worse, not returned. I'd rather deal with the fall-out from telling a person "no" than the emotional turmoil of having something happen to one of my treasured books.

I have a lot of books and lend a lot of books. It's so cool to share something I loved!
Not the hard-to-finc ones, though. I had some bad experiences.

I only choose friends that don't read so I don't have to lend my books to anybody!!

Actually, I lend books easily without giving much thought to it. If the person ruins the book (hasn't happened yet) I'd just replace it. But I don't lend rare books that would be hard to replace, unless it's to somebody who is living with me...

If I really love a book and want to keep it I don't lend it, otherwise most books I happily lend or give away.

I lend books to people I really trust will take care of them.

I give away books sometimes on bookmooch.com but that's different.

I only lend books to my best friend. (Who lives five hours away from me, so they get shipped back and forth.) And that's because she's the one person who actually returns them.

If I read a book that I think someone else might enjoy also, I tend to just buy a second copy for them, rather than loan them mine.
