There are two books that immediately come to mind, one fiction and one non-fiction...

A Spiritual Renegade's Guide to the Good Life, by Lama Marut, was the gentle reminder I needed to pay attention to and find joy in the present because that is all we have, really. The past exists only in our memories and its ability to affect us is limited to how we allow ourselves to think of these memories. The future, too, only exists in our minds, and its ability to affect us only extends as far as our anxieties, fears, and attitudes.

The other book that I found personally inspiring was The Red Tent, by Anita Diamant. Though it is a work of fiction, the idea that a person, especially a woman, could endure so much anguish in childhood and early adulthood, and yet find happiness and a peaceful existence later in life is immensely comforting and appealing to me. It gives me hope for the future.

I think Bossypants by Tina Fey and Lunatic Heroes by C. Anthony Martignetti for nonfiction; both are very honest and the latter is especially sad but inspiring.

Night Film made me believe in how good fiction can be.
