Several characters from children's literature immediately spring to mind, Ramona Quimby, and Amelia Bedelia to name just two. This doesn't prevent me from reading these books with my son, however; he enjoys them immensely. It just means that I inwardly sigh every time he asks me to read one of them, which, given his love of books, is rather a lot.

As for a character I find annoying in adult literature, I'll go with Sansa Stark from George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series. She's whiny; she's obnoxious; and she's immature...all the things any normal teenage girl is. I dread the Sansa chapters each time they come around and can't wait to get through them.

Even as a kid, I didn't like Amelia Bedelia! I didn't think her antics were amusing at all, and was astounded that she didn't get fired simply because she could cook delicious food. (One time, she actually DID get fired, and the book was all about her trying different jobs until she was missed and brought back)

Zoey Redbird from the House of Night series. She's completely and utterly unbearable. Read her narration and tell me you don't want to sink your fist in her face. DDD:

All I can think of is all the awful characters in Jane Austen novels. You have some great people, but then some really stupid people. Wickham, Mr. Collins, Lydia in Pride & Prejudice.

But I really dislike Emma from the novel of the same name. Ugh.

I hate the kind of characters when unique role is to dispense "wisdom" I disagree with. Even if I disagree only a little, if he's supposed to be really always right, he will annoy me. Aslan from Narnia is the first who somes to mind, but there are a lot of others.
