For some reason today I am feeling nostalgic about "the good ol' days" when the approach of summer meant high anticipation for the release of the latest Harry Potter book. There was something, dare I say, magical about the excitement that accompanied the HP books. None of the books touted as "The Next Harry Potter!!!" since then have come close to generating that bookstore buzz.
It's been a while - perhaps it's time to go back to the beginning and reread the series.

Has anyone read Wicked Appetite by Janet Evanovich? It's the start of a new series. I have not read any of her previous books but this one sounds interesting. I know that at least character is a carry-over from another series of hers, so I'm wondering if I can read this one without having read the others. If you've read this or any of her other books, I'd like to hear what you thought of them. I tried One For The Money a long time ago and couldn't get into it at all, so I'm a little leery of spending money on this one.

Questions I have spent today pondering while I whip myself into a frenzy for next week's library sale = instant meme!
1. What's on your current book wishlist? If too many to list, describe what kind of things are on it.
2. If you could get just one of those as a gift right now, which would it be?
3. Are there any books in your collection that you want a different or secondary copy of?
4. When is the last time you sold/donated/otherwise got rid of books you didn't want anymore?
5. Do you have any books written in a language other than your native tongue?

Oops, late, sorry...
If I'd remembered to post this yesterday, I'd have been reading something, too. Now I'm caught between books. *woeface*

- If you could spend the day with any fictional female character, who would it be and what would you do?
- If you could spend the day with any fictional male character, who would it be and what would you do?
- If you could spend the day with any fictional fantastic character, what would it be, and what would you do?
- If you could spend the day with anyone from a work of non-fiction, who would it be and what would you do? (Person can be dead or alive.)
- If you could spend the day in any fictional setting, where would it be and what would you do?
- If you could spend the day in any non-fiction setting, where would it be and what would you do? (this allows for answers such as “London at the time of Sherlock Holmes", etc.)
- If you could join the “cast”, as it were, of any novel, which novel would you pick, who would you be, and how would you affect the story? (i.e. you could be an additional Bennet sister in Pride and Prejudice, who is a rival for Mr. Bingley’s attentions, and who complicates the plot in some way.)
- If you could inspire any poet to write about you, who would you like that poet to be and what sort of things would you like him/her to say?
- If you could have any portion of your life turned into a work of fiction or a non-fiction, what part of your life would you choose and why?
- If you were writing your memoirs, what would you call them?

I recently when to an author signing (where I met the amazing Tamora Pierce) and it got me thinking about signed books. So I wrote a short signed book meme! Here it is:
How many books do you have which are signed by an author or illustrator?
(optional: list them, or take a photo of all of them).
Which was the first one you got?
Which was the most recent?
Have you ever bought a book already signed by an author?
Have you ever forged an author’s signature in a book?
Which of your signed books has the best story?
If you could pick one book you own by a living author to get signed, which would you pick?
If you could pick one book you own by a deceased author to get signed, which would you pick?
Do you have a signed book which you haven’t read yet?
Have you ever gone to an author signing and not gotten your book signed?

Stephen King, our favourite prolific writer of discomfiting squirmities, is writing a sequel to The Shining, (entitled Dr. Sleep). As a way of passing the time between now and when I go insane from impatience, I give you this early Hallowe’en present… a Stephen King meme.
( this cut is an opportunity for non-king-fans to move on. Do not simply answer every question negatively just to mess with my mind, because I actually read the answers to these, and I will beat you with a copy of The Stand. )

It's banned book week. I've yet to see a definitive list of banned/challenged books, perhaps (depressingly) because if you take into account every school and library district in every country privileged enough to care about what books are available to the public rather than that books are available to the public, everything with sex or tough issues or, well, words will have come under disapproving scrutiny.
The idea with this list is to ignore the horrifying concept of banning books at all, and save one from the pile. Which is your rescue, and why?
( list under the cut )

Name of the book you're reading, author and some passage that really strikes you. Note: if you're just not feeling it with your current book, feel free to draw from a different book you like.

Haven't done one of these for a while. I miss the randomness.
